ABOUT US

Pygmy Kid with Rat Terrier Puppy Aerial view of the RD Ranch

The RD Ranch is located in Northern California in rural Amador County. It was originally homesteaded by the Walker family in 1876. We purchased our 60-acre ranch in 1988. Since then we have been involved with breeding and caring for animals.
Karmel with Lisa Kay We raise Nubians and Nigerian Dwarf goats. Our Nubians are registered with the American Dairy Goat Association under the herd name RD-Ranch. Our Nigerian Dwarfs are registered with the American Goat Society. Our policy is to only keep the best for breeding stock. We breed only those does that can easily birth. Most of our kids are bottle fed. This ensures friendlier goats. All kids are vaccinated, dewormed, dehorned and males are neutered before being released to their new owners. Unneutered males must be ordered in advance.
Sadie and her pups We also raise Rat Terriers dogs. Our dogs are registered and of the best quality. We are not a puppy mill. The puppies are born in our bedroom in a child playpen and receive individual attention from the day they are born. You can be assured that a puppy purchased from us will be of the best quality. To see pictures of a litter of puppies being born, please check out our Birthing Webpage.
Abyssinian kittens Registered Abyssinian Cats also reside at the RD Ranch. Our kittens are socialized with humans from the date of birth. The Abyssinian is a very people-oriented cat. By nature they must be in the middle of the human activity. These cats need human and feline companionship.

Dexter CattleDexter Cattle are one of the naturally smallest breeds of cows and have not been miniaturized by breeding as have other miniature breeds. The Dexter is a dual purpose breed, with both beef and dairy qualities. They are a hardy animal, thriving in both hot and cold climates with little difficulty. They give birth easily, are good foragers and are excellent mothers. Dexters generally have a very good temperment and are highly intelligent. This combined with their small size makes them easy to handle and ideal for small acreage.

Our Dexters are registered with American Dexter Cattle Association. This registry was the original one and honestly, I have found them to be much more responsive than the alternative.

Mowgi, our male AnatolianOur newest addition to our group is our Anatolian Livestock Guardian Dogs. If I were to use one word to describe them it would be "AWESOME". We no longer have to worry about Coyotes or Mountain Lions. Our herd is protected by our Mowgi and his gal pal, Callie.

Callie is a purebred, registered Anatolian. Mowgi is not. He is 1/4 Great Pyrenees. Therefore, our puppies are not registered. But honestly, I don't think the Coyotes or Mountain Lions are concerned about their registry. They just see the big ass (yes I said it) dogs in the goat pasture and they don't want to play. It is so "AWESOME" to see them on night patrol. And they work good for day duty patrol too. Ask my neighbor if he will come in the gate again without us there (he wasn't hurt but was definitely warned). Mowgi (and he is big) jumped up and grabbed his jacket. He let him off with a warning.
